Paulina Villalpando founder of PAAR, where every piece tells a story

In Mexico City, People, Play by Regina García

Step into the world of PAAR with its founder, Paulina Villalpando, who started the brand at just 17 years old and has since then, transmitted her creativity and vision of the world to every piece she designs.

With sustainability as one of the pillars of the brand, the jewelry pieces are not mass-made, they are created to last and hold a special meaning for anyone who wears them. To support this principle, many pieces are made of recycled and recovered metals and stones. PAAR also offers a variety of services for their clients, including the creation of engagement rings for people all over the world, crafting of bespoke jewelry, repairs and fixing for every type of jewelry, aiming to reuse old pieces instead of contributing in the consumerism.

Title: Founder, PAAR

City you live in: Between London and Mexico City

Most recent city visited… Oxford

A typical day in my life includes… Going to the gym, having breakfast (my favorite meal of the day), going to work, seeing friends for dinner or drinks, or hosting dinners at home. I try to do a cultural activity at least once a week.

I was born… in Mexico City

When I was younger, I wanted to be… a professional ballerina (I haven’t fully given up on that dream, I recently started dancing classical ballet again)

My first job was… my brand! I founded PAAR when I was seventeen years old, the year before I graduated from high school.

My favorite thing about traveling is… being bored. I love being bored on planes, trains, taxis. This gives me time to think and for creativity to flow. I love listening to music, writing or drawing in my notebook, people watching, trying new food, and drawing inspiration from what I hear, smell, feel or whoever I meet. I also love how much I have learned about myself. Traveling alone is one of my favorite things.

I’m currently listening to… Fred Again

If I could have dinner with anyone, it would be… Jane Goodall or David Attenborough

One thing I cannot travel without… my Kindle

I’m inspired by… anyone who is hard working and value-driven and wants to make the World a better place.

If I could change anything in the world, it would be… climate change

The perfect day would be… at the beach, with all my family and favorite friends and lots of dogs.

My favorite place I’ve visited… I loved Costa Rica!

My top 3 bucket list destinations: Japan, the Arctic Circle, Antarctica

My life… is awesome

I’m currently working on… boosting my creativity through dance, music and art.

What was your first contact with jewelry? When I was young, I used to watch my paternal grandmother get ready in the mornings. She used to put her make up on and then choose incredible jewelry for the day.

What was the main inspiration behind PAAR? I wanted to go travel with my friends and needed to start a business to save money. That trip changed the way I see the world.

What makes PAAR stand out from other brands? It’s sustainability ambition and its desire to stay away from fast paced trends and unsustainable production and consumption. I am not interested in selling mass-made pieces, I want each piece to tell a story and last generations.

What has been the biggest challenge of PAAR? Growing the brand in a time where social media doesn’t favor genuine content and people are addicted to content that does humanity no good.

What is your favorite stone and metal to work with? I love yellow gold, black diamonds and emeralds.
