Luis Barragán was an engineer, architect and artist who won the Pritzker Prize in 1980, and who was and still is an inspiration for architects and designers from all around the world for his work that communicates with the inhabitants. He was born in Guadalajara where he studied and trained as an engineer and architect and spent a lot of his time traveling through Europe where he found inspiration in the gardens and throughout the Mediterranean villas, which eventually becoming an influence that shaped him throughout his life. Barragán worked with architects like Louis Kahn in the draft Salk Institute in La Jolla, California and with artists like Mathias Goeritz and many other personalities of the architectural world.
He established himself in Mexico City to develop the greater part of his work and always feeling the call of nature, he achieved to buy a big field in 1940 where he developed some gardens. Many of these gardens were sold to different customers while Barragán preserved a small one to make his own house-studio. In this space he developed his taste completely, untethered to other people and always approaching to popular architecture with ancient convent features and with the intention of creating a new expression of contemporary Mexican architecture.
The Home Study Luis Barragan was built in 1948 and is part of the world heritage of UNESCO. It represents one of the contemporary architectural works of great worldwide importance. It is a masterpiece in the development of the modern movement and exemplifies traditional elements as well as the vernacular, and it expresses what is necessary to create a sense of thrill and transmit tranquility to any visitor, as does any true work of art.
