Riviera Maya will soon have something else to boast in addition to its tropical landscapes and Caribbean waters. Mexican President Enrique Pena Nieto recently announced that a brand new $840 million theme park is planned for the east coast of the Yucatan peninsula, just north of Playa del Carmen in the Punta Maroma area.
Named Amikoo, which means friend in the Mayan language, the park will be inspired by Mayan culture and is expected to feature rides and attractions that highlight Maya characters and mythology, the dominant culture in the Riviera Maya.
The park’s first phase, which plans to open as early as November 2018, will include the start of the 320-room Amikoo Resort, a Mayan archaeology and anthropology museum (Maam), a panoramic flight simulator of submarine expeditions (Mares de Mexico), a wave pool (Amikoo Surf) and a pirate-themed adventure of Bacalar. A convention center, a shopping area, a gastronomic center and a concert arena are also planned for the first phase.
The second phase, which is planned for a 2020 completion will include the theme park with 24 rides, divided into four distinct areas: Park Maya Extreme, Maya Adventure, Maya Discovery and Amikoo Land. Upon completion, Amikoo Resort will have themed areas, beaches and more including a total of 1,200 hotel rooms. The complex will feature 300 acres, with more than 200 of those used for conservation.
