The tropical coastal paradise of Tulum is leading a heartwarming mission to save its sea turtles.
This ambitious project that’s supported by the local government focuses on the protection and conservation of five key beaches in Tulum where a remarkable 26,500 baby turtles from three different species have safely scuttled into the ocean. These tiny travelers find sanctuary along a stunning six-kilometer coastline, encompassing beloved spots like Tulum’s Santa Fe Beach and Fishermen’s Beach.
Born out of a deep-seated respect for nature, this initiative began in 2010 to shield these gentle creatures and their nests, especially in areas lacking regular monitoring. It’s a community-wide effort, with various groups like the Papaya Playa Project and environmental volunteers joining hands to ensure these beaches remain safe havens for young turtle hatchlings.
According to local Biologist Rocío Peralta Galicia, 454 turtle nests have been safeguarded, culminating in the release of these 26,500 hatchlings across three species: the Green Sea Turtle (Chelonia mydas), Loggerhead Turtle (Caretta caretta) and Leatherback Turtle (Dermochelys coriacea).
The heart of Tulum beats with a commitment to its marine life, driven by Tulum Mayor Diego Castañón Trejo’s vision for sustainable tourism and environmental stewardship to preserve the beauty and diversity of the natural world.
