Playa del Carmen’s newest playground, The Carmen Hotel was recently awarded “Best Design Hotel” of the Mexican Peninsula in the AAI (Mexican Architect and Interior Design Association) Mexico Awards Premio Peninsula in the Hotel and Tourism category. The category includes hotels built from 2015 to 2017 in the states of Yucatan, Quintana Roo, Tabasco, Chiapas and Campeche. The AAI is based in Monterrey, Mexico with a goal of bringing together the best in interior design and architecture nationwide.
The funky beachfront hotel’s design is thanks to sanzpont [arquitectura], an international design firm with offices in Barcelona, Cancun and Chicago. Inspired by the coral reef of the Caribbean, the modern, avant-garde design creates a unique atmosphere. From the exterior to the interior, the design of the hotel is a true work of art. The exterior makes a loud statement with its bright pops of color and unique curvilinear organic design that can be recognized from far away.
Its iconic architecture is not the only reason this boutique stay nabbed the “Best Design Hotel” award though. The building is also eco-friendly and was designed to have the best energy performance construction on the Mexican peninsula. It exhibits low energy consumption through its high-density polyurethane thermal system insulation in every wall. It also features triple glass windows which retains cooling, and low-energy LED lighting makes it a high-efficiency building.
The award will add to sanzpont’s growing list of nearly 30 awards and recognitions. In 2016 the architecture firm was named the No. 1 Mexican Designer at World Design Rankings in Milan. The firm focuses on creativity and design from small to large scale products including furniture, interior spaces and large buildings, among other projects.
