A typical day in my life includes: observing the world and searching for characters or emotions to use in my roles. I am a relentless writer, either working in a novel or just gathering notes for my future projects.
I was born in México City, in the midst of the 1968 Tlatelolco student slaughter and the celebration of the Olympic Games.
When I was young, as a kid, I wanted to work in the diplomatic service since I loved to travel. Later, I became more interested in Economics, to foster a positive impact on my country through a position in the government.
How did you know you wanted to be a writer? First, because I realized that literature gives more answers and options than economics and politics, then I realized I am a silent person and written language gives me the opportunity to speak up from very deep within.
What is your latest novel “El dolor de la memoria” (The pain of Memory) about? As all my novels, it carries a social content and a profound psychological search. It starts with an abduction but, as the character goes through this trauma and experiences the lack of freedom and an intense fear, a forgotten memory emerges from his childhood, and the kidnapping becomes a two-fold exposure, physical and mental, and one helps the other because we all, as a human beings, have a huge capacity to survive, to overcome adversities and learn while getting stronger.
What is the most challenging part of writing? At a personal level it’s always hard to deal with emotions. I write about topics that make me feel uncomfortable or generate questions, so I have to deal between logical, verisimilitude and crossed feelings, some of them always in my mind. Then, of course, comes the challenge of publish, lots of corrections are necessary to achieve a clean and nice manuscript. It is also quite pleasant to hear just one reading experience making it worth all the hard work and time devoted to each literary production.
