Magical Towns: Bacalar

In Magical Towns by Suzanne Koch

Bacalar, a quiet town southwest of Tulum, just north of the border of Belize, is an escape from the outside world. While there may not be a whole lot happening in this jungle paradise, the lack of movement is the main allure of Bacalar. The lagoon of seven colors that’s located on the east side of the highway is the main attraction and source of exotic eye-candy here. The long yet narrow lake exhibits vibrant, contrasting hues of blues and greens and serves to be the locale of fun water activities.

The town’s main plaza consists of the San Felipe Fort, a 16th century construction built to protect the town from pirate attacks, as well as the San Joaquin Parish Church. The small town’s lack of large resorts give the affordable boutique offerings an upper hand. Hotel Rancho Encantado is located on the shores of the lagoon and offers a variety of bungalows, a spa and Los Hechizos, the casual restaurant and bar on-site. Another hotel set along the shorefront is Villas Eco-Románticas Kúuch Ka’anil that features an outdoor pool, spa and restaurant along with a private beach area and a terrace for gazing out at the mesmerizing lagoon.

Another highlight of this charming town is Los Aluxes restaurant where you can enjoy more than a delicious plate of Yucatacean food. The open-air palapa restaurant sits waterfront and a towering over-water swing set beckons travelers to jump on and soar over the crystal blue world below. Another favorite restaurant is La Playita whose menu blends Mexican and Argentinean flavors together to serve fresh seafood items. After your meal wander out to the dock’s end for a relaxing finish.

Before leaving make sure to visit Cenote Azul, a natural pool with an on-site restaurant and bar or experience BioMaya, a park full of adventure. The highlight is the zip-lining tour that takes you through the rainforest where multi-colored macaws and stunning lagoon views join the fun. A guided tour, nature walk and souvenir shop also accompany this park.
