Empowered, delicate and extremely talented. The story of this young Jewelry Designer is a story of perseverance and commitment; although we know that succeeding abroad is not easy, she has made it look so natural and enjoyable that it makes us admire her even more. María José was born in Guadalajara, Jalisco, a state where the love for Mexican culture and impressive handwork is a fact. Surely all of this was inspiring for her, who at a young age decided to study Jewelry Design in New York City and in 2014 launched her namesake company, which supports fair trade practices and ethical production. We exclusively interviewed María José to tell us a little more about her inspiration and her, so this is what she told us.
When did your passion for jewelry begin?
I have always had an eye for things that are pretty. I love the aesthetics of things, design, color and construction. My background is in Art, but Jewelry always felt more personal and intimate; it wasn’t until I moved from L.A. to New York that I decided to pursue my career as a Jeweler and became a Gemologist and Jewelry Designer.
What inspires you?
Beauty, I love to surround myself with beauty. I find inspiration in travel, music, art, food, film and fashion, but much of my inspiration comes from nature, there is nothing compared to it; at the end diamonds, emeralds and sapphires all come from nature.
How would you describe your creative process?
I’m always paying attention, I try to keep my eyes and heart open to me creativity, it´s a constant flow, a connection. It really doesn’t begin or end, but rather you have magic moments, connections where you are able to translate it into something beautiful.
Which is your favorite gemstone and why?
Emeralds, it is my personal stone! It is a stone to be known for love and opens clairvoyance, which is the ability to help us get information about our surroundings. It is also the stone that represents health, abundance and well-being.
The color is my absolute favorite, I love how vivid and lush the stone is, full of life and fire.
How is Mexico reflected in your jewelry?
I am incredibly proud of being Mexican, I’m very much inspired by the creativity and sophistication of women in Latin America. All of my jewelry is made in Los Angeles, but most polishers, setters, and casters are Mexican artisans and I love that!
What has been your most difficult challenge as a jeweler?
So many! All businesses and entrepreneurs face challenges, but at the same time it´s a great opportunity for learning. I’ve been very lucky to surround myself with amazing people that mentor me, guide me and their support has been crucial in my career.
What is your biggest goal?
To continue to work with amazing, beautiful stones with the best team and foremost with my amazing clients.
