What does Casa El Faro bring to the community of Maravilla?
Casa El Faro (named for the Spanish word for “Lighthouse”) is positioned at the pinnacle of Maravilla’s property. From the ocean, the glass box lights up atop the highest peak of the rugged coastline and serves as a beacon to the community.
It is designed by renowned, international award-winning interior designer Martyn Lawrence Bullard and has prime ocean-front living on the Sea of Cortez with unparalleled view. Casa El Faro is a modern interpretation of mid-century Mexican design; the home features clean lines mixed with sophisticated vintage pieces, and unexpected whimsical elements including a hand-painted, playful ceiling mural. Design elements include authentic Mexican artwork and sculpture, sleek cabinetry, carved woods, and custom glazed ceramic tiles inspired by Mexico’s artisan communities. The residence also features large entertaining spaces with luxurious vibrant green, purple, and blue fabrics bringing warmth to the space.
Stand out features include an interior terrace firepit, floating communal bar, ice table, and a leather hanging swing in addition to a carved plaster relief walls in the entry, which pays homage to the local Baja landscape.
We also got to interview Katrien Van Der Schueren of Voila! Creative Studio; she was commissioned to create select pieces of art for casa El Faro, and this is what she told us.
How was Voila involved in El Faro residence?
Voila! operated partly as an art consultant partly as an artist and as a framer. Part of the art is made in house whilst other art has been outsourced to local artisans.
What process did you use to create the art pieces for each space?
We started from the vibe of architecture, the surroundings and the traditions in Mexican art as well as its history. The interior design choices were the main driver for medium choice, color and texture.
Which was the biggest challenge in the project?
Choice of materials is always a challenge in an environment such as Cabo. Indoor/ outdoor living and the wind conditions are something to really consider when choosing materials.
Which was your favorite part of working on this project?
The color choices we were allowed to work with and the amount of sculptural pieces we were allowed to integrate.
