With its vibrant blue waters, warm sandy beaches and energetic day and night scene, it’s no surprise that Cancun is Mexico’s No. 1 tourist destination and growing in popularity more and more each year. The Cancun Convention & Visitors Bureau recently announced a two-percent increase in visitors between January and May—more than 2,937,949 visitors— when compared to the same period last year. In fact, January alone set a record with 1,057,999 visitors, a five-percent increase compared to last year. Along with an influx of sun-seeking tourists, the destination has also managed to acquire some recognitions from top travel agencies this year like the 2016 Top Labor Day International Destinations for North Americans by Cheapoair and No. 1 Most Popular International Summer Destination by TripAdvisor.
“The destination continues to evolve year-after-year, always offering visitors fresh reasons to come back again and again,” said Jesus Almaguer, CEO of the Cancun CVB. “Cancun’s constant commitment to the expansion and diversification of its tourism offerings will lead the city into yet another record-breaking year in arrivals.”
Some notable renovations and new buildings to the area, along with the recent lift on flight restrictions can be attributed to the increase in visitors. With more places to stay and more ways to get there, Cancun is reaping the benefits. See below for some new flight routes and new resort news.
