If there’s one thing that can ruin a vacation, it’s a bad sunburn and mild temperatures make it ever-so-easy to unknowingly get one. With beaches and resort pools as gorgeous as the ones in Mexico, it’s impossible to not take advantage of every minute of sunshine, which is why sun protection is so important. If you plan on being out from sun up to sun down (and why wouldn’t you?), then consider taking every precaution you can to avoid a pesky, peeling burn.
1. Sunscreen
It may be the most obvious way to shield the sun’s rays from penetrating your skin, but it still serves to be one of the best ways. While drugstore shelves are lined with countless forms of the stuff—lotions, spray, sticks, oils, etc—the classic lotions work the best. Opt for a higher SPF and be sure to re-apply every few hours. Try a Consumer Report favorite La Roche-Posay Anthelios Melt-In Milk with an SPF of 60 or swing for a classic like Coppertone Water Babies SPF 50.
2. Moisturizers / Primers
While SPF-based cosmetics are great for vacation, they should also be incorporated into your daily routine—even back home. Grab products like foundations, primers and moisturizers with at least an SPF rating of 30 and slather on. Try Giorgio Armani Maestro UV Skin Defense Primer SPF 50, Dior Extreme Perfect & Hold Makeup Base SPF 20, or Cerave AM Facial Moisturizing Lotion with SPF 30 for a start. Don’t forget your lips! Products like Nivea A Kiss of Protection Sun Protection Lip Care SPF 30 and Shiseido Sun Protection Lip Treatment SPF 36 are consumer favorites.
3. Shades
Grab some sunglasses with polarized lenses with UV filters. Try to stay away from mirrored lenses as they bounce the UV rays back onto your cheeks and opt for a larger, oversized pair to protect the skin around your eyes which can become easily susceptible to the sun’s rays.
4. Hats
Large-brimmed hats are perfect for keeping the ray’s away and shading you under the summer sun. A brim that’s at least four inches all the way around is ideal for keeping your ears and scalp protected. Looks like this is just another excuse to hit the mall.
